As a part of AARP's 60th Anniversary, AARP launched an ambitious effort in 2019 to create 53 fitness parks – one each in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. These AARP Sponsored Outdoor Fitness Parks Organized by FitLot are designed for adaptive use by people with a wide range of abilities and exercise needs.

Herman Holloway, Sr. Park, formerly known as Compton Park, is located in the 4th Councilmanic District at the intersection of E. 7th and N. Lombard Streets. The park was originally named after Spencer Compton, the Earl of Wilmington and 18th century British Prime Minister, for whom the city of Wilmington was named. In 1989, the park was renamed after Herman M. Holloway, Sr., Delaware's first Black state senator.
